It was a pleasure to talk at the South West Conservative Conference about my time in Washington DC at the Campaign Leadership College (CLC) held by the Leadership Institute. I was one of two Conservative Party volunteers selected nationally to attend, and my role was to take notes to share when home.
At the SW Conference I discussed how AI can help our campaigns and political work, the importance of in-person contact with the electorate, and how to clarify our messaging and express our policies in ways that people from across the political spectrum can resonate with. Mostly, it was a privilege to emphasise the core purpose behind the CLC; that, as stewards of the political philosophy that leads to prosperity, we ‘owe it to [our] philosophy to learn how to win’.
During my time at the CLC, in addition to the practical work and learning, we listened to leading campaigners and experts who had worked at various levels of US government up to and including the White House. We also heard from visiting politicians, including our own Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Huddleston, as well as Australian ex-PM Tony Abbott.
